Yoga Methods Practiced at OCY

Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar who was a student of T. Krishnamacharya. Together with Pattabhi Jois, Iyengar was largely responsible for bringing the practice of modern yoga to the West. It focuses heavily on precise body alignment, holding postures for longer times, and using props like blocks, belts, and blankets to help every body safely achieve correct form. Iyengar is beneficial for people of all ages and body types, and can be particularly effective for those with physical limitations or injuries.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa yoga is a dynamic style of yoga where you link body movement directly with your breath. It translates to "placing in a special way". Poses flow smoothly from one to the next like a moving meditation, unlike static styles that hold poses for a long time. Classes change, and do not follow a fixed set of poses. The continuous pace builds body heat and increases heart rate for a wonderful all-body workout.

Fat Liberation Yoga

The philosophy and culture of this class is steeped in the principles of fat liberation: allowing yourself to be comfortable in your body without any body shaming, body checking, or diet talk. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, do their own thing, and generally feel at home in their bodies.

Yin Yoga

Yin yoga is a slow, quiet style of yoga. You hold simple floor poses for three to five minutes or longer. Your muscles stay relaxed so you can stretch deep connective tissues like fascia and ligaments. It helps improve joint mobility and calms your mind.
